NIKO THE NINJA – DIGITAL DRAWING
After doing so much hand drawn animation, I decided to get out the graphics tablet and make a digital drawing of my character Niko.
I used my Huion tablet on Photoshop and found a new plug-in called Lazy Nezumi, which helps me to make smoother strokes as I draw. It’s so ideal for me as I tend to have a very shaky hand, but enjoy make very bold, cartoony characters.
This is my process:
Stage 1 – Block out a rough shape to get the proportions right
Stage 2 – Create a rough, sketchy outline
Stage 3 – Block in the different parts of the character (to make the next stage easier)
Stage 4 – Create a smoother, final outline (using the smoother plugin)
Stage 5 – Hide other layers and add final details to his face and outfit
Stage 6 – Block in the whole character with dark grey
Stage 7 – Draw in the rest of the colour
Stage 8 – Shading and highlights
This has really helped me to finalise my character, ready to animate. I’m happy with the colours and level of detail. The next stage will be to play around with the character with some different poses, angles and expressions, and then to start thinking about his movement and walk cycle.
